This Months Newsletter Tip....advice on lighting

The right lighting can create a mood, light up a task, or accent a decorative focal point (like hand painted tile perhaps...).

An intimate atmosphere can be created in a living room with low-level incandescent lights
that are on dimmers. The mood can be enhanced with soft uplights
hidden in corners on the floor under a plant or over a special piece of art.

Task lighting in the bathroom comes from incandescent lights at each side of the mirror
to provide the most flattering shadowing of a person's reflection; side mounts also eliminate potential
shadowing that might result from overhead lighting.

The general rule for kitchens is to light it for two purposes.
One is for socializing because people like to hang out in the kitchen, even if they're not cooking.
The other purpose, naturally, is to prepare food.

As a result, kitchens need to have separate zones, each on its own switch and dimmer.

Food preparation is usually one or more zones, and, if it's an eat-in kitchen, the eating area would be another.  A kitchen space really works well with two or more hanging pendant lights.
Depending upon the scale of the room and amount of islands, tables and cabinets you
can easily create an intimate atmosphere in any specific area with different fixtures and dimming options.

Use a large pendant in the center of the room,  over an island perhaps (without a cooktop).
Hanging three or more pendant lights over a bar area will give you general task and ambient lighting
to create a soft atmosphere that's functional.
Visually it looks best if your lights are spaced about four feet apart.

My personal favorite kitchen lighting is over-cabinet and under-cabinet lamps.
They all need their own dimmers for the different areas they are placed,
this creates bright work zones for food preparation and maybe an area where the
bar is placed where the lighting is easier on the eye.

These different levels of lighting are a personal preference but what's important
is to give everyone the flexibility to exercise their own lighting preference.

Here are the answers some of your questions!

I am concerned if I am using your instruction on learning how to paint and I make a mistake ...it is permanent?
After your work is fired it is permanent however...  as you are painting you can change your design as many times as you like.  Any and all changes can be made before the work is fired.  The paint and fine line I will be teaching you about is easily removed.  You can change a small piece of your creation or wipe out the entire thing and start over!

Will the new artwork I create on the tiles last?
Yes! Your artwork will remain like new on your sinks, countertops, floors and sinks forever.  The firing process guarantees permanency and durability to your design.

What kind of tile shall I buy?
Floor tiles can be used anywhere,  including countertops and walls.  Wall tiles need to be used on the walls only because they are not quite as strong as the floor tiles. Any size and shape that works for your project is acceptable.  There are many finishes as you will discover,  as long as it is a glazed clay tile any will work.  This is one of the topics that will be covered in the Be An Artist lesson.   All tiles are strong, durable and will last forever!

Can I paint on a sink that is already installed and won't the design wear off?
I would recommend you purchase a new sink. I have painted hundreds of sinks that are used everyday by my clients.  They are thrilled with the unique and beautiful painted look and it wears just like a regular glazed manufactured sink you would buy at Home Depot or Kohler Company.  You will be amazed how easy it is to create your own hand painted sink!

Do I paint on tiles that are bisque or green ware?
No, the paints we use are applied to any glazed, manufactured tile.  That is the beauty of this process,  it is so easy to go to any tile store or Home Depot and buy your tile.  That way you can select the tile that will look best for your project.  Tiles come in all sizes and usually the client prefers to select their tiles because of the unlimited finishes available.     Designs can be painted on just about any finished tile you select,  even terra cotta.

How do you get the detail to appear so elegant yet simple?
Many tile artists who paint on green ware or bisque tiles are frustrated because even when using the finest brush possible they are unable to achieve a thin black line.

Using these paints with the pen I discovered you will be able to do fine calligraphy or get the finest detail when drawing your design. This thin black line allows you to trap your colors by drawing the design first (if you choose) and create the most beautiful designs possible.  It is easy to learn this technique and everything you need to know is in the audio tapes and transcripts. When you use this pen combined with the painting technique you will experience control in a way you have never experienced before.  Never seen in tile work before and now available for you to learn.   The results of this process is a beautiful design showing each vein in every leaf.

What kind of designs will I be able to create? You will learn how to create a mural or individual tiles that can be dropped in here and there on your counter and/or backsplash. If you want to learn how to paint tiles to sell in retail shops you will also learn how to mount as many tiles to a board as you like to hang on a wall.  These sell in shops and will help you to begin generating income immediately.  Just think of painting during the weekend and evenings and making extra money just for having fun!  All this is discussed in the tapes.

Where do I get the supplies and what do I need?  The Paints and supplies link on this website will show you what's available individually or in kits that will get you started right away.  You get all the information you need. The investment of time you will put into your artwork deserves premium quality paints and supplies,  I've done my research so you can trust this site to provide  you with the best sources, highest quality products and the best pricing.  You will get phone numbers and website addresses of where to go to get all your painting needs met if you choose to try the Be An Artist instruction series and reports.

How do I get my tiles fired if I don't have a kiln?
This is easy,  there are so many places that fire work for other people because not everyone has a kiln,  especially when they are starting out.  You will find out how easy it is just by picking up the phone.  Some places or people even offer pick up and delivery!

What tapes do you recommend to get started?
I recommend that you get the Be An Artist and The Be An Artist Advanced instruction audio tapes to get going.  They compliment each other and tell you everything you need to know to successfully complete any project or idea you have for your home.  Sinks,  designing your own set of tableware,  different types of designs for your counter tops or backsplashes,  where to buy materials and step by step instruction that will have you completing a project in a weekend!
